This course is designed for Certified Health & Wellness Coaches who have limited experience working with mental health and have questions about what to do when clients present with mental health symptoms during sessions.

This course has two main parts. Part 1 addresses basic mental health symptoms, as well as when a coach might defer to their own coaching skills to guide the client vs when a coach might want to refer out to a mental health professional. Part 1 can be completed at your convenience.

However, Part 2 addresses what to do when a coach needs to deter a possible suicidal crisis. This is where QPR Gatekeeper training comes in. Due to QPR training guidelines, this part must occur as a live webinar. Please mark the date and time in your calendar. If missed, you will not receive CE credit.

"QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer, a life-saving strategy outlining 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Similar to how those trained in CPR help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicidal crisis. These "gatekeepers" learn how to question, persuade and refer someone to get the appropriate help they need." [QPR website]

Gatekeepers can be anyone, but those who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide, like coaches who have already built trust and rapport with their client, can be especially valuable.

Upon completion of this course, the coach will be able to:

Describe when to defer to their skills, refer out to a mental health professional, or deter harm during coaching;
Identify common mental health symptoms;
Recognize and evaluate suicide warning signs and risk factors;
Apply QPR in a potential suicidal crisis situation.

Since this is a virtual presentation, participants will be provided a link and code to access the accompanying QPR booklet and class resources. Links to suicide resources also will be available after registration and during the presentation.

Upon completion, participants will receive two certificates: 1) an NBHWC Approved Course completion certificate worth 4 CE's total, and 2) a certificate as a Certified QPR Gatekeeper. The course completion certificate is what will be needed to log NBHWC CE hours specifically, while the QPR certificate is for personal recognition.
